Allow the head to completely air dry before you put it back in the machine.

Too many people make the mistake of trying to get the last bit of ink out of their printer cartridges before they have them replaced. The thing is though, you want to replace them before they go completely dry. When you wait until the very last drop of ink has been used, you are putting your printer head under a lot of wear and tear it doesn't need to go through.
